Health Buzz: More Americans Choosing Plastic Surgery as Economy Recovers

Plastic Surgery Rises With Rebounding Economy

Nipping and tucking is on the rise, regaining popularity as the economy rebounds. Last year, more than 13 million elective cosmetic surgeries were performed nationally, up 5 percent from 2009, says the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The increase is the first reported since the recession began, according to ABC News. The No. 1 most popular procedure in 2010 was breast augmentation—which nearly 300,000 Americans underwent— followed by nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, liposuction, and tummy tucks. Botox injections were the top non-surgical procedure performed, followed by soft tissue fillers, chemical peels, laser hair removal, and microdermabrasion. "There's some pent-up demand for cosmetic surgical procedures," ASPS president Phillip Haeck said in a news release. "People waited a couple of years or more to have procedures until their finances were at least somewhat back in order. But more consumers are again willing to spend more to look better."

Parents, Not Kids, Are the Biggest Abusers of Technology

Parents complain that their kids spend too much time texting and surfing the Web. But it may be that the biggest abusers of new technology are parents themselves. Sherry Turkle, a clinical psychologist and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who studies how people use technology, says she has found that children are worried that their parents' love affairs with BlackBerries, iPhones, and computers are fracturing their families. Turkle elaborates in her new book, Alone Together (Basic Books, $28.95), and in an edited interview with U.S. News contributor Nancy Shute.

Turkle did not expect to take parents to task for paying more attention to their technology than to their children. "I expected to be writing a book about teenagers driving their parents crazy," she says. "It turned out to be a much more compelling story of parents texting in the car, parents texting at dinner, and kids not knowing what to do. It was a very surprising finding. And very moving. The stories really were about children wanting parents' full attention." [Read more: Parents, Not Kids, Are the Biggest Abusers of Technology.]

Online Personal Training: 6 Fitness and Nutrition Sites That Rock

Ever consider using technology to enhance your workouts or weight loss endeavors? There are hundreds of websites and phone applications designed to help you track your eating habits, increase the effectiveness of your workout routines, and find healthy food choices on the go. Here's a look at some of the best, according to U.S. News fitness blogger Ryan Sullivan:

DailyBurn. This free app, designed specifically for the iPhone, will help you track your eating habits, workouts, and body measurements on a daily basis. It has an extensive database with thousands of foods including nutritional data from many restaurants. It also includes a FoodScanner app that uses your phone's camera to read barcodes from different products. Simply scan the barcode and input the number of servings you consume to have the nutritional data immediately logged into the application.

LoloBurn. This can act like your virtual personal trainer. For its $5 purchase price, the app download comes equipped with 36 workout routines for beginner, intermediate, and advanced users. A trainer's voice guides you through the workout and encourages you along the way. Another great feature of LoloBurn is that the music playing in the background is automatically sped up or slowed down to match the pace of your walk, run, or jog. That means you won't have to worry about trying to sprint while a slow love song plays on the radio. [Read more: Online Personal Training: 6 Fitness and Nutrition Sites That Rock.]
